this is quite simply one of the most glorious records you will hear this year. it would be easy to lazily reference it against classic period rephlex/planet mu stuff (oops, i just did!), and indeed it appears to share some of the same heritage (even going so far as to feature a remix of rephlex artist global goon in its tracklisting) - but chris leary aka ochre is obviously a man on his own mission. gorgeously lush, but at the same time super-funky…as electronic as kraftwerk starring in a remake of tron, yet somehow as pastoral and organic as edward elgar…much like his label-mate ed chamberlain, leary manages that tricky task of being supremely technical in his programming and arrangements, but without losing the heart and soul of the music amidst all the studio trickery. you know that old chestnut often said when referring to vintage or classic music, >they dont make them like that any more<? well they do…and here it is! simply fantastic.

hot second release on messalina records, featuring not like you, a brilliant re edit of alan parsons i wouldnt wanna be like you which extends the groove perfectly and works it into a chugging balearic rock stormer. the b side opens with i just did it, an excellent edit of an obscure eurythmics cut from their 1984 soundtrack lp sped up, pumped up and stretched out into a bouncing balearic groove. this is followed by past twelve, an extended edit of jj cales version of the classic after midnight. great stuff.

dan is a german producer and dj with impeccable taste. previous output for highgrade has been superb and he has some amazing stuff due to drop on moon harbour (where he takes care of promotions in fine style) so hairy claw have handpicked him for the first release of 2008. deep, groovy and with just the right amount of drive, xibeca is a mordern house cut of the highest order. supernature and tsuba artists bearweasel take the techier elements of dans original and twist them into a flowing techhouse cut too - so theres something for the heavier crowds too. there are big things afoot with hairy claw, we ll keep you posted.
